Safe Horizon is a leading nonprofit that operates Domestic Violence (DV) Shelter Programs, offering safe and confidential spaces for DV survivors and their children. These programs are grounded in empathy, respect, and a trauma-informed, client-centered approach to healing.
Role Overview
As a Client Services Specialist, you’ll play a crucial part in supporting individuals and families affected by domestic violence. You’ll handle crisis intervention, assist with shelter intakes, distribute resources, and support clients through their recovery journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Client Support & Intake
- Conduct emergency shelter intakes across multiple sites.
- Assess safety needs and create risk management plans.
- Respond using non-judgmental, trauma-informed communication.
- Crisis & Conflict Intervention
- Provide de-escalation and mediation when needed.
- Offer crisis intervention for residents and their families.
- Casework & Documentation
- Record activity logs and case management notes promptly.
- Refer clients to necessary services and support systems.
- Facility & Program Support
- Conduct health and safety checks.
- Distribute supplies and donations.
- Assist with apartment prep, cleaning, and discharge processes.
- Community Engagement
- Plan social activities and attend special events.
- Join donor tours and participate in client celebrations.
- Other Duties
- Provide childcare during client sessions when needed.
- Escort clients to important appointments.
- Support in emergency protocols (e.g., fire safety).
Qualifications & Certifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED (required)
- Experience: 2+ years of relevant experience preferred
- Skills: Basic computer skills, crisis management, and communication
Certifications to obtain within 3 months (depending on shelter type):
- FDNY F07 & S95 or F80 Fire Safety
- Pediatric CPR/First Aid
- NYS Security Guard License
