Program Overview

The Kyoto Retreat 2025 is a fully funded international residency designed to offer visual artists, curators, and writers a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culture, history, and creative inspiration. Hosted in Kyoto—Japan’s ancient capital and cultural heart—the retreat emphasizes reflection, research, and cultural exploration rather than production.

Participants are not expected to create new work during the retreat. Instead, the focus is on personal growth, cultural immersion, and creative rejuvenation.

Financial Coverage

All selected participants will receive:

• Round-trip airfare to Kansai International Airport (KIX) or Osaka Itami Airport (ITM)
• Private bedroom in a shared residence for the full 4-week stay
• $800 USD stipend to support meals and local transportation

There are no application or participation fees.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

• Be a visual artist, curator, or writer
• Be at least 21 years old at the time of application
• Be based anywhere in the world
• Demonstrate a commitment to creative practice and cultural engagement
• Be open to cross-cultural exchange and collaborative exploration

The program is inclusive of all races, genders, cultures, and religions.
